HYP-ART

HypArt is a synergetic online art project that was started in

1994.  The idea is to create an online artwork using contributions

from people around the world.  Each project starts with a theme

and a virtual online canvas that is divided into 9 squares.

Contributors request a specific square and create an artistic

image that expresses the main theme to fill that square.  These

9 artistic images create one piece of artwork that is the combined

effort of many contributors.  To date, 31 projects have been

completed online.

THE MOST WANTED PAINTINGS

A Dia art project was started in 1995 in which a professional

market research survey was used to determine color and taste

preferences in paintings.  The project was created by artists

Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid and sponsored by Chase

Manhatten bank.  More than a dozen countries were surveyed in

hopes of discovering what the majority of people really want in a

painting.  The survey results are in and "The Most Wanted Paintings"

may surprise you.

ABOUT THE VIRTUAL GALLERY

Confronting Cancer Through Art is a unique exhibition that gives vision and

voice to the experiences of all those who have confronted cancer.

Sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center and the Arthur

Ross Gallery, the juried exhibition includes nearly 200 works and statements by

112 artists. Many of the artists are cancer survivors who used their art as a means

of expressing their feelings and coping with their illness. Others created their

works in response to the illness of a family member or friend.

When issuing a call for submissions, the Cancer Center and the Arthur Ross

Gallery hoped to obtain enough works to mount a respectable show. The

response was overwhelming.

The exhibition was extended

A VIEW FROM THE SOAPBOX

Stuck in a quandary of disappearing funds from the National Endowment

for the Arts and the need to "commercialize" or take a "day job " to survive

financially has led this artist to dive into the world of the unthinkable.  He has

pioneered an innovative way of blending the sale of art into the world of

business trade.  By founding The Traded Art Securities Commission in a project

called Artshare, artist Ben MacNeill is selling STOCK in himself and breaking

ground for others in the art community looking for a viable way of marketing Arts

in our ever changing business economy.

ARTS PROGRAMS FOR AT-RISK YOUTH

The escalation of violent crimes committed by youth has been the topic

for much American debate and concern.  Our youth are at risk and the

statistics show that a striking 18% of all violent crimes in America are

committed by youths, 33% of all serious property damage is committed by

our youth, and a staggering 135,000 children carry guns to school each day!

What is causing this deterioration in our youth, and what can we do to help

them become responsible adults leading productive lives?  First, it helps to

understand the motivation behind the acts.  In locating the source of the

motivation we learn what the deficiency is in these young lives.  In providing

a remedy for this deficiency a solution has been found that is proving to

provide results.  Find out how the Institute for Community Development

and the Arts can help establish programs in your area that will benefit your

youth and help give them the future they deserve.
